Research Interests

Research with the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Prof. Karmgard is involved in the construction and characterization of the hadron calorimeters as well as the design and testing of the electro-optical readout system for the hadron calorimeter. R&D efforts involve new techniques in particle detector technology. Specifically, the research group is developing new scintillating materials and new methods of reading out a scintillating tile calorimeter. These techniques have been proposed for a new detector at the Next Linear Collider (NLC). Current physics research includes an effort to understand the evolution of the quark mixing matrix in the Standard Model of particle physics by demonstrating how the matrix may arise in a fundamental basis.
