Research Interests

As a member of the DØ collaboration, Prof. Warchol studies proton-antiproton collisions in the DØ detector, located in the Fermilab Tevatron accelerator. Her interests are in seeking to explain why quarks have mass. At present she is a member of the team building the scintillating fiber tracker for the upgrade of the DØ detector; this tracker will consist of an 80,000 fiber readout by new solid state photomultipliers (VLPCs). With the upgraded DØ detector, it will be possible to look for the Higgs mechanism of the origin of mass, and to make precise studies of the top quark, which because of its large mass could be more closely connected to the mechanism of the origin of mass than the other quarks.
