This shop is available to the entire Notre Dame campus and any person, business, or organization looking for professional machining.

The Physics Machine Shop is a full service design and fabrication shop staffed with progressive minded craftsmen and state-of-the-art machinery. Our use of CNC machine tools and CAD/CAM software allows us to produce complex designs in a wide variety of materials in a timely and cost effective manner. We work directly from blueprints or drawings provided by our customers or take ideas from individuals and engineer their particular needs. Our wide and diverse collection of capabilities serves the entire community, from simple to complex with precision in the scientific, medical, mechanical and artistic disciplines.

State-of-the-art equipment combined with expert technical advice in the Physics Machine Shop allows both physics students and faculty alike to carry out experiments on the cutting edge of technology. From the most minute fiber optic connectors to steam turbine parts, every day brings a new challenge to machine tooling.  The variety of experimental needs is met with an in-house welding shop, an assortment of available materials, and experienced personnel.

We maintain an extensive stock of metals and plastics including aluminum, brass, copper, steel, stainless steel, carbon, nylon, Teflon, Delrin, polycarbonate, and plexiglass. Our knowledge combined with this stock of raw materials allows us to start most jobs within 24 hours.
