Prof. Jacek Furdyna, The Aurora and Thomas Marquez Chair in Information Theory and Computer Technology, has been appointed as member of the Program Committee of the International Conference “Spins and Photonic Beams at Interface” (SPBI ’2011) which was held in Minsk, Belarus, on September 25-27, 2011. The conference commemorated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Fyodor I. Fedorov, 1911-1994, a Belorussian physicist who, among his other contributions to science, discovered an optical effect known as the Spin Hall Effect of Light. Prof. Furdyna has written a “Viewpoint” for the American Physical Society on this subject: http://physics.aps.org/articles/v3/56.

At the conference in Minsk Prof. Furdyna delivered an Invited Lecture, “Optical Manipulation of Spin States in Semiconductor Quantum Dots.” The material for this talk has been prepared in collaboration with Profs. Sanghoon Lee, Margaret Dobrowolska, and Xinyu Liu.
