Prof. Kathie Newman, Department of Physics, is being recognized with this year’s Director of Graduate Studies Award. The award is given by the Graduate School to recognize the person who has made the most significant impact on graduate studies in his or her program.

Newman has served as the department’s DGS since 2003. Her role encompasses all duties related to graduate student administration including advising, admissions, and teaching assignments. Newman is also active in ongoing refinement of the graduate student curriculum offered by the department.

One notable contribution Newman has made is the development of the department’s summer course which is designed to prepare new graduate students for the required preliminary exams. This course also prepares first year students to be better teaching assistants during the academic year.

In addition to her busy role as Director of Graduate Studies, Newman continues to teach full time and advise two Ph.D. students.
