Walter C. Miller |
The Lecture Fund was established in 1989 in memory of Prof. Walter Miller. Prof. Miller graduated from St. Joseph's College in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He is also an alumnus of the University of Notre Dame having graduated in 1948 with a Ph.D. in Physics. Prof. Miller was actively engaged in research and teaching. His primary research interests were electro- and photo-nuclear physics, and particle accelerators. Prof. Miller served on the Notre Dame faculty from 1946 to 1982 and was actively engaged in many university affairs. He served as departmental chairman from 1975 to 1982. Prof. Miller will be remembered as a wonderful individual, inspiring teacher and outstanding researcher. Through this fund the physics department is able to provide excellence speakers for the lecture series. The first lecture was held on October 15, 1990. |
Biswas Fellowship Endowment
Dr. N.N. Biswas completed his graduate work in physics with the Ph.D. degree from the University of Calcutta in 1955, and subsequently held post-doctoral positions and fellowships at research institutes in Goettingen (Germany), Bologna (Italy) and Berkeley (USA). He returned to Germany in 1961 to take up the position of Senior Scientist at the Max-Planck Institute for Physics and Astrophysics in Munich, the research institute directed by the Nobelist Prof. Werner Heisenbert. Prof. Biswas joined the faculty and the High Energy Physics research group at the University of Notrre Dame in 1966, at the invitation of Profs. Kenney and Shephard, former colleagues from MPI-Munich, and was made Professor in 1977.
