We will be trying to establish a laser-interferometer-based vibration monitor. This is designed to follow changes in position on the 10's of nanometer scale over a distance of several meters. It will be part of a spectrometer to measure the beam energy at a future electron-positron Linear Collider. I expect the student to aid in all aspects of this setup, from laser alignment to data acquisition to analysis of the results.

The student would work on the Double Chooz reactor neutrino experiment. We need to validate a simulation program and to use it in the design phase of the experiment. Validation consists of testing it against available experimental data.

The other possibility would be to work on the BaBar experiment. We are trying to search for branching ratios of charged and neutral B mesons to final states containing strange baryons, like the lambda. This involves sifting through a vast amount of data and developing algorithms to effectively isolate small signals from backgrounds.
