Our summer 2008 program of Professional Development (PD) of pre-College (K-12th grades) Science and Mathematics Teachers will be in several parts:

1) Week-long Teacher Science Institutes of K-6 teachers, led by Professor Joseph Bellina at Saint Mary's College (June-August at Saint Mary's).
2) Several 2-week-long summer sessions for 6-8 grade science and mathematics teachers, led by Gordon Berry and others (June-July at Notre Dame).
3) We are also doing a research study of the 49 teacher institutes of Indiana to ascertain the type and effectiveness of guided inquiry learning in their science programs. Some initial studies of local K-12 and College teachers are already underway.
4) We are developing a set of curriculum guidelines for K-12 teachers in all Indiana public schools. This work is being done in collaboration with the Indiana State Board of Education Curriculum Department.

REU participants could work in one or all three parts of these programs, and also study the effectiveness of the teacher institutes.
