What the Social Science Wizards of Armageddon Bring to Our Understanding of Nuclear Strategy

Prof. Michael Desch
Packey J. Dee Professor of International Relations
Department of Political Science
Brian and Jeannelle Brady Family Director of the Notre Dame International Security Center

The study of nuclear strategy is a quintessentially interdisciplinary exercise given the important roles of the atomic scientists, the military, and civilian strategists in ushering the nuclear age and subsequently shaping how we analyze it and think about concrete policy. This talk will focus upon how social science, in particular, both shaped our understanding of the impact of the nuclear revolution on relations among states and also influenced U.S. nuclear strategy from the late 1940s to the present.
