Hybrid systems based on superconducting qubits and electrons on helium

Our experimental research group at MSU, the Laboratory for Hybrid Quantum Systems (LHQS), is working on a wide variety of exciting experiments at the boundary of condensed matter physics and quantum information science (QIS).

Our group is working to create hybrid quantum systems with novel properties and functionality by bringing together materials and devices with a variety of interacting degrees of freedom. In particular, I will describe recent work from our group on new hybrid QIS systems based on superconducting qubits + superfluids, electrons on helium, and quantum acoustic devices. By leveraging the tool-kit of circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED), and the experimental techniques of ultra-low temperature science, our experiments reveal insights into the coherence properties of established superconducting qubit systems and single electron devices as well as potential methods for improving their coherence. Additionally, our experiments are opening the door to developing altogether new qubits based on the quantized motion of electrons trapped on the surface on helium. When coupled to piezoacoustic devices we are also exploring the possibility of developing flying qubit platforms based on these electrons and exploring novel regimes of quantum optics with superconducting qubits and to realize tailor-made Hamiltonians with interesting properties.
