Searching for beyond-the-standard model physics with dilepton events and extensions enabled by the trigger

Jonathan Long

Beyond-the-standard model physics searches are a major part of the LHC's Run 2 and 3 physics programs.  Di-lepton final states are a powerful tool for BSM searches because they suppress large SM backgrounds and provide clean environments to search for new physics.  Furthermore, they enable the use of unique shapes in the invariant mass spectrum to search for new physics signatures.  In this talk, I will cover details of SUSY-inspired ATLAS di-lepton searches and highlight areas to look for more challenging opportunities.  Additionally, I will discuss how recent improvements to the trigger will allow us to extend current searches with displaced leptons.
