Time for Discovery

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will soon start its third period of proton-proton collisions. Previous periods were characterized by a large increase in the proton beam energy, and higher beam energy provided sensitivity to potential new physics at higher mass scales. Over the next two decades the LHC will deliver roughly 20-30 times the number of proton-proton collisions to date at roughly the same beam energy. I’ll present some search results using the full dataset of 13 TeV proton-proton collisions recorded by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector and discuss some approaches that I think will be interesting as the LHC transitions to a new era. I’ll also briefly describe a new precision timing detector that will be constructed and installed in CMS in the next few years that will enable the precision physics program made possible by larger datasets.
