Professor Mark Caprio, of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Notre Dame, has been elected to the directorship of the Executive Board of the theory alliance for the U.S. Department of Energy's Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). He will serve in the director line for three years, successively as Director Elect, Director, and Past Director. He has been a member of the Executive Board since 2025.
The FRIB Theory Alliance (FRIB-TA) is a coalition of scientists from universities and national laboratories who seek to foster advancements in theory related to diverse areas of FRIB science; optimize the coupling between theory and experiment; and stimulate the field by creating permanent theory positions across the country, attracting young talent through the national FRIB Theory Fellow Program, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, and shepherding international initiatives.
Professor Caprio is a theoretical nuclear physicist interested inĀ ab initio predictions of nuclear structure (i.e., from first principles), collective phenomena in nuclear structure, and computational and group theoretical methods for the nuclear many-body problem.
