Umesh Garg, professor of physics, has been appointed to the Beam-time Program Advisory Committee (B-PAC) of the Cyclotron Facility of the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP) at Osaka University in Osaka, Japan. The committee advises the director on the scientific merit and feasibility of proposals for experiments using the RCNP AVF or AVF-Ring cyclotron accelerator facility, as well as providing scientific and technical advice to the director on problems during experiments.
The committee receives proposals and travels to Osaka twice a year for presentations by applicants, allocation of beam time, and approval of budgets. Applicants who do not receive beam time typically receive advice on how to improve their proposals. Garg’s first committee meeting is in August.
Garg, who uses the facility in his study of nuclear compressibility, has worked there for 12 years and taken undergraduate and graduate students to the cyclotron for research, including Research Experience for Undergraduates participants.
