Juan Maldacena, PhD, of the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton will deliver a lecture as part of the John A. Lynch Lecture Series on Wednesday, November 6. "Strings, gauge theories and gravity," is the title of the talk being given at 4 pm in Rm 118 of Nieuwland Science Hall.

Maldacena's work focuses on quantum gravity, string theory, and quantum field theory. He has proposed a relationship between quantum gravity and quantum field theories that elucidates various aspects of both theories. He is studying this relationship further in order to understand the deep connection between black holes and quantum field theories, and he is also exploring the connection between string theory and cosmology.

Malcadena is the recipient of numerous awards, most recently: The International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Dirac Prize and Medal 2008; the Fundamental Physics Prize 2012; and the Pomeranchuk Prize 2012.
