Metals and Pristine Regions in the Universe

I will review the empirical constraints on the evolution of metals in the gaseous structures of the universe focusing in particular on the interface between galaxies and the diffuse intergalactic medium. I will discuss these observational results within the context of recent state-of-the-art cosmological simulations.
