Nuclear reactions from first principles

Dr. Kostas Kravvaris
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

The cross sections of nuclear reactions involving light ions are key inputs to astrophysics simulations, as well as stewardship science applications. Despite decades of efforts and an astounding advance in experimental techniques, many reactions of interest remain either poorly known or completely undetermined in the energy regions of interest. In this talk, I will discuss current work on the predictive modeling and simulation of such processes, outline recent efforts to extend the reach of first-principle calculations of light-ion reactions, as well as quantifying their uncertainties, and present results for various nuclear systems relevant to stellar modeling and applications.
