Operation Epsilon and the Allied Fear of a German Atomic Bomb

Prof. Dieter Hoffmann
Max PIanck Institute
Berlin, Germany

In the last days of Second World War, ten top German atomic scientists were captured as part of an intelligence operation and were ultimately interned for six months in a country house belonging to the English secret service and systematically wiretapped. My talk will examine the historical background of “Operation Epsilon” and explore the life stories of the interned scientists, in particular which role they played in the German nuclear project and in post-war-Germany as well.
