Understanding the emergence of complex macroscopic properties in quantum materials from their microscopic interactions is essential for engineering next-generation technologies. In this colloquium, I will discuss how state-of-the-art photon scattering techniques provide a unique lens to dissect these interactions. Focusing on two recent results, I will demonstrate the connection between the interactions’ spectroscopic fingerprints and the transport properties found in unconventional superconductors and colossal magneto-resistors. My conclusion will feature a perspective on the promising opportunities that cutting-edge photon spectroscopies hold for quantum materials research.
