Professor Ani Aprahamian, the Frank M. Freimann Professor of Physics, was invited to TRIUMF Science Week in Vancouver, Canada in July 2018. TRIUMF, the national laboratory of Canada for particle and nuclear physics and accelerator-based science, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. TRIUMF Science Week focused on state-of-the-art theory, observation, and experiments connected to our place in the universe. The week also included an ARIEL Science Workshop, From ARIEL to the Universe.
The Advanced Rare IsotopE Laboratory (ARIEL) is TRIUMF’s flagship multidisciplinary research facility, with an e-LINAC accelerator producing exotic ion beams. Aprahamian was invited to discuss new initiatives with the ARIEL e-LINAC. The major themes of the workshop were “New Directions with ARIEL” and “The Origin of Heavy Elements in the Universe”. Aprahamian’s presentation was on R-process sensitivities and measurements. The new directions at TRIUMF’s ARIEL are based extensively on the research work performed at the University of Notre Dame by Professors Aprahamian and Rebecca Surman.
