The Science of Flight--Rockets, Drones, Space is the title of the 10th Annual Sensing Our World summer camp program for middle school students. The camp takes place at the University of Notre Dame from July 6-10.
At this year’s camp students will learn the science behind the successful flights of birds and humans by building their own models to test their ideas of the many physical forces involved. There will be a focus on understanding the physics of the forces required for their successes. Experiments will range from paper airplane dynamics (gliders), to solid fuel powered rocketry, parachutes, helicopters and finally to quadcopters (drones). Model testing will include building wind-tunnels. Learning through enjoyment and purposeful improvement is emphasized.
The final afternoon of the camp is open to parents and to the public. On that day the participants will showcase their learning from the week and enjoy a presentation in the Digital Visualization Theater in the Jordan Hall of Science.

The registration fee for the week is $250; scholarships are available for students in a “free lunch program”. Registration is limited, so students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. The registration deadline is May 23, 2015. Successful applicants will be notified shortly thereafter. (If the first week fills, a second camp week of July 13-17 could be added.).
