Khachatur Manukyan, research associate professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Notre Dame, was honored at the 2022 1st Source Bank Commercialization Awards event for his first U.S. patent, number 9,580,323. The patent, "Method of producing graphene and other graphene carbon materials," was issued in February 2017. The invention provides a cost and energy-efficient method for synthesizing graphene by exothermic self-sustained reactions between refractory compounds and carbon-containing polymers. This new method prepares kilogram quantities of high-quality graphene and related materials.

Established in 2008, the commercialization award is presented annually to faculty from Notre Dame or the Indiana University School of Medicine-South Bend who have successfully transitioned their technologies from the lab to the marketplace.
